Things were looking up for the New York Yankees before they got into this series. They had just won the first series against the Boston Red Sox after the All-Star break beating their archrivals in two of the their three games. They even dominated Boston 9-1 in the rubber match. Then they beat the Philadelphia Phillies and their former manager Joe Girardi in both of their matchups.
This was all especially great news after many of their team tested positive for COVID-19 including their superstar Aaron Judge. Their ace, Gerrit Cole, said the team felt like it got hit by a mini truck at the time. It was a moment of great resilience to bounce back from all of that especially for how mediocre the Yankees were the first half of the season. It's crazy how just two games have ended that rosy outlook.

The Red Sox have gotten the best of the Yanks in the first two games of this series as it has moved back to Boston. In both games the Yankees had a one-run lead in both games. They lost the first one in extras and lost pretty decisively last night even though Cole was on the mound. He didn't even have that bad of a night. He just had a bad bottom of the 5th giving up three runs including a homer to Sox third baseman Rafael Devers who actually hit two homers to seal the victory.
These next two games are imperative for the Bronx Bombers to win because of the stranglehold the Red Sox still have on the AL East. Well the Tampa Bay Rays are only a game back in the division. This division will likely have two playoff representatives but if the Yankees want to be one of them they need to shore up their nine-game division deficit right now. That might be tough in this one as Nathan Eovaldi is taking the mound for the Red Sox in this one. He has effectively become their number one with Chris Sale still on the IL. He has a 3.57 ERA with only five homers allowed and he passed a 100 innings awhile ago. Jameson Taillon is starting for the Yankees and he has to step it up from his 4.60 ERA to keep the Yankees out of an even larger hole.
