The Montreal Canadiens showed in Game 2 that they most definitely deserve to be in this series. Game 1 was a forgettable moment for the Habs falling 5-1 and the score of Game 2 (3-1) on paper wouldn’t indicate anything different. But Montreal outshot Tampa 43-23 and just looked like the better team playing a much more uptempo game than they did in the opener. Where Game 1 was defined by Tampa’s incredible offense led by the playoffs leading scorer Nikita Kucherov, Game 2 was all about goaltending.

For Tampa it was the reason they won and for Montreal Carey Price needs to dig deep down  to get his team back in this series. First off, Tampa’s Andrei Vasilevskiy easily won the first star by saving 42 of 43 attempts in Friday’s matchup. Montreal couldn’t find an answer on how to get past him and ended up paying for it. Price outplayed the Vezina Award winner Marc-Andre Fleury in the last round against Vegas but none of that has translated to this series.

Price has been playing for Montreal since 2007. He was supposed to be the stability and veteran presence this young team needed especially for how big of an underdog they are to the defending champions. The last goal wasn’t his fault after Joel Edmundson did a reverse pass off the boards right to Tampa’s Ondřej Palát to sneak by Price. You could just tell that deflated everything in Montreal’s sails as they were only down one with 10 minutes left before that goal. But still Price will be the first one to tell you he has to stop more shots especially when this great Tampa offense couldn’t create any at home.

It helps that the Canadiens will not only be going home but getting their coach Dominique Ducharme back after he tested positive for COVID-19 in the last series. He’s missed six games thus far stretching back to Game 3 against Vegas. Ducharme has been a stabilizing force for this team as he took over as interim head coach mid-season after Montreal fired their head coach Claude Julien back in late February. It is a miracle the Habs even made the playoffs, let alone the Stanley Cup Finals. Whatever happens the rest of this series, Ducharme should have his interim tag removed. Let’s hope this becomes a series once it shifts back to Canada for Game 3.
