The Los Angeles Clippers are slightly bigger underdogs in Game 2 than they were in the series opener of the Western Conference Finals because we've seen this script before. The Phoenix Suns are still without their superstar point guard, Chris Paul, who is out due to COVID-19 protocols. Absence has been a common theme throughout these NBA Playoffs and is mostly attributed to injuries likely due to the earlier start of the season so soon after the 2020 NBA bubble finals ended.

On top of James Harden, Kyrie Irving and a hobbled Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Clippers are no exception of missing one of their biggest stars. At least with the Suns, Paul is likely to come back at some point in this series. The same can't be said for Kawhi Leonard who has missed four-straight games with a knee injury with no return in sight. Going into Game 1, this didn't seem to be much of a problem.

Of course any lineup is infinitely better with Kawhi in it but the Clippers looked very impressive after he went out in Game 4 of the Conference Semis against Utah. In Game 5, Paul George had his best game as a Clipper scoring nearly 40 points and led LA to a resounding and surprising win in Utah where they weren't even close to winning the first two games on the road even with Leonard in the lineup. The beginning of Game 6 was the start all of us expected the Clippers to be without Kawhi.

But then the Jazz collapsed in the second half and blew a 25-point lead and the Clippers advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time ever. The Utah Jazz are a better team than the Suns especially without Paul so it was surprising that they couldn't pull out another victory. To be fair, it was close but Devin Booker was the critical factor recording his first-ever triple-double.

The Clippers will need more support beyond PG-13 if they are going to avoid going back home down 0-2 like they did in their last series. It helps that Marcus Morris is expected to play but it is uncertain how much they can expect from him after only playing 21 minutes in game one and sustaining a knee injury. Coach Tyronn Lue seems to be the answer of getting this franchise past it's usual bumps in the second round and be more resilient in general. The Clippers are the oldest franchise to never have made it to the NBA Finals. If they aren't able to beat the Suns without Paul, then that drought will certainly continue.
