The United States sit joint-top of Group B following their first outing of the tournament, but it would be a lie to suggest there isn’t room for improvement ahead of Matchday 2.

This iteration of the Stars and Stripes scarcely scraped past Haiti in their group-stage opener thanks to Sam Vines’ first goal in international colors:

The Colorado Rapids defender became the 11th player in the current squad to score for the national team, with 57-cap veteran Gyasi Zardes the most prolific among those with 12 to his name. Berhalter isn’t underplaying the significance of their upcoming clash against Martinique, even despite the fact Thursday’s opponents were humbled 4-1 by Canada in their own opener. Specifically, the U.S. coach highlighted Les Matininos’ advantage in experience, with 11 of their squad boasting double-digit international caps compared to the nine among his own squad:

Of Martinique’s 23 players, only five player their soccer outside the domestic league, none of whom are part of a top-flight outfit heading into the 2021-22 European campaign. However, having so many players based near to one another can often have benefits of its own, not least of which is the advantage of being able to train in close proximity on a more regular basis.

Coach Mario Bocaly’s side have now gone their last six outings without a win (3D, 3L), although draws against Honduras and Trinidad & Tobago (twice) hint at a tough-to-beat talent. The United States just about had enough to see off Haiti, but Les Matinino will provide a good barometer of how they learn from their errors ahead of a climactic Group B showdown with Canada.
