The score of the opening game of the 2020 NBA Finals was 116-98 as the Los Angeles Lakers dominated the Miami Heat. That score wasn’t even representative of how much the Lakers utilized a steam roller to beat the Heat. At one point the Lakers led as much as 32 points and it might have been the easiest opener for LeBron James and his illustrious Finals career.

That mostly had to do with the performance of Anthony Davis. In his first ever Finals game, he had little room to play better. He scored 34, with nine rebounds and three blocks. Only Allen Iverson, Kevin Durant and Michael Jordan have scored more than Davis in their first Finals appearance.  Not bad company as the Heat simply had no answer for The Brow. Maybe the more difficult thing to swallow for Heat fans is that it might not get better in Game 2.

It’s only going to get more difficult for the Heat to defend Davis without Goran Dragic and their best defensive option Bam Adebayo. Dragic tore his plantar fascia in his left foot and anybody who has experienced that pain you know he’ll be out for at least the rest of the series. Adebayo came out in the third quarter with a shoulder strain and hopefully he will be ready for Game 2. While Jimmy Butler played well scoring 23 points, he had a twisted ankle of his own. There’s only one day off to get healthy. They’re going to have to change their fortunes quick to change the trajectory of this series.

The Heat have to play like they did in the first quarter of Game 1 if they are going to have a chance. They were up 23-10 and went on a 13-0 run at a point which was the only encouraging sign for Heat fans. They have been one of the best three point shooting teams in the bubble and that’s how they beat the Celtics and that’s how they played well against the Lakers. However brief a moment that was, they need to create that ball movement they had for a quarter to get those open looks.

The way to stop Davis is do the exact opposite. Make him shoot those threes and don’t let him get comfortable in the paint. Adebayo has to come back if Game 2 if they have any shot to do this. We’ll see if Miami can make the adjustments and make this a series. They are better than they played in Game 1, but they have to right the ship quick. Or the Lakers rafters are going to be even more crowded.
