Group C reads like an open book at Euro 2020, with the Netherlands and Ukraine ready to battle on Sunday for what they will feel is a very attainable first-place finish in one of the weaker pools. Frank de Boer has struggled to build confidence in his reign since he was appointed Netherlands boss in 2020, and a Ukraine team unbeaten in their last six will make for a tricky headliner.

Dutch fans will have been forgiven for their frosty reception towards De Boer after he became the first Netherlands coach who failed to win any of their first four games in charge of the team last year. Results have steadily improved as the nation has now suffered just one defeat in their last 10—a 4-2 loss to Turkey in 2022 World Cup qualifying—concluding their Euros prep with a 3-0 win over Georgia. Certain lapses in judgement linger, however, the most recent of which was De Boer’s reference to Twente winger Queensy Menig being an option—despite the fact he’s not even been named in the squad:

Eyebrows were also raised after the coach decided against naming a replacement for Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek, who was recently ruled out of the competition due to injury:

The absence of Virgil van Dijk also hurts their chances after he missed almost all of Liverpool’s 2020-21 campaign. Thankfully for the Netherlands, there is a surviving contingent of star talent who could, in theory, power the side to greater things even despite their struggles against higher-quality teams of late.

Memphis Depay leads the line with grace and is the nation’s top scorer among those in the current squad (26 goals). Vice-captain Georginio Wijnaldum is the only other active player who has double-digit goals for his country (22 in total). This will be just the third time that the Oranje have faced Ukraine and their maiden meeting under competitive circumstances, having drawn 1-1 in a friendly the last time they played one another back in 2010.

Ukrainian football writer Vadim Furmanov paid national team icon and all-time top scorer Andriy Shevchenko high praise as he leads the country into his first major tournament as coach:

The Yellow and Blue have failed to move past the group stage in each of their European Championship appearances since becoming their own nation (2012, ’16). Their chances of breaking through that barrier look good considering their other Group C opponents, Austria and North Macedonia, each appear beatable on paper. Dutch spirits were also crushed by a group-stage exit at Euro 2016, giving De Boer at least one way in which he can prove himself superior to the previous regime—as long as they advance.
