América have some demons to exorcise in the coming campaign following back-to-back quarter-final finishes in each of the last two league campaigns. There’s a sense Solari has the means to do so. After a stuttered start to life in Mexico, the Real Madrid legend led his club to a second-place finish in the 2021 Clausura, but a 5-5 draw with Pachuca saw them exit in the first round of the Liguilla. Las Aguilas were unable to advance despite coming back to beat Los Tuzos 4-2 at home in the second leg, losing out on away goals:

Solari will hope a full off-season with América will pay dividends in the coming campaign, with three years having now passed since the club last lifted league silverware in the 2018 Apertura. Querétaro coach Héctor Altamirano isn’t that much more experienced as a senior coach in Liga MX, having only been appointed to the head job at the Estadio Corregidora last October. That was two months after Querétaro throttled their Mexico City counterparts 4-1 when they last met in Querétaro City, their biggest win over América in more than five years:

Los Gallos Blancos had failed to beat Las Aguilas in six meetings across all competitions prior to that, and Solari will be looking to restore a little of that dominance for the capital outfit. Midfielder Fernando Madrigal could come into contact with his old club after leaving Querétaro to join América at the start of July, while Altamirano has added to his squad with a raft of free signings, too.
