The Vols (56-12) face UNC (48-14) on Sunday in their second CWS game after winning 12-11 against Florida State on Friday. Dylan Dreiling hit a walk-off single to cap a four-run ninth inning. Tennessee’s ninth-inning rally was memorable against Florida State, but it wasn’t the only clutch inning. UT had three straight two-out hits in the eighth inning, including a run-scoring single that set the stage for the ninth. Tennessee hit .556 with two outs, .458 with runners on base and .455 with runners in scoring position.
Starter Drew Beam, who has had an up-and-down postseason, will have the chance to send Tennessee one game closer to the championship series. Beam hasn’t reached the sixth inning since the final regular season series against South Carolina.
UNC reached Sunday with a walk-off single from star Vance Honeycutt against Virginia on Friday to win 3-2. That has been UNC’s theme in the postseason, as Honeycutt also hit a walk-off homer against WVU in the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Honeycutt leads the Tar Heels with 26 home runs and is hitting .312. Casey Cook is hitting .345 with 18 home runs.
The Tar Heels walk and score a lot, ranking 11th nationally in runs with 532 and 12th nationally in walks with 355. They are 16th nationally in home runs with 113.
