The last race of the Round of 12 will go down Sunday right outside of Charlotte. Only two drivers have punched their way to the next round of eight. It's probably not all too surprising those names are Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin. While NASCAR was one of the first major American sports to return in May after everything shut down because of the pandemic, Jimmie Johnson announced that the delay of the season would bring about his retirement after 2020. We did learn before this race, that Alex Bowman will have drive the illustrious No. 48 in 2021.
As for the race, the conditions at Charlotte Motor Speedway are becoming very unpredictable. The Xfinity Series had crazy and wet conditions that ended in an overtime win by A.J. Allmendinger. The conditions in Concord forecasted for Sunday include a 70 percent chance of precipitation from Tropical Rainstorm Delta. Will the weather hold up long enough to get in a clean race or are we in for another soaked track? The Roval course is already difficult enough with the mixture of a street course with a traditional road course. It's going to take a tremendous level of precision not to be eliminated in Charlotte.
Chase Elliott is the favorite going into this one. He also won this race in 2019. This is his comfort zone as he's won four times out of 11 on road courses. Martin Truex Jr., who is also fighting for his playoff life, is favored right behind Elliott. Anything can happen at this stage of the season, especially with such an unpredictable track and weather conditions.
