After a Friday rainout, the Salt Lake Bees and Sacramento River Cats try once more to open their Pacific Coast League season on Saturday night
Rain postponed Friday’s scheduled opening game and on Saturday night, the Salt Lake Bees and Sacramento River Cats give it another go at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California. The Bees, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, were 70-79 last season, sixth overall in the Pacific Coast League. The top farm club of the San Francisco Giants, Sacramento finished 67-82, good for eighth in the 10-team league. Friday’s postponement is set to be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday. Teams are opening the season with a three-game series before settling into the six-game series routine beginning on Tuesday.

The River Cats roster is headlined by 22-year-old shortstop Marco Luciano, ranked No. 39 on the MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list and rated second in the Giants organization. Luciano struggled with back and hamstring injuries last season and hit .223/.334/.442 in 74 games across Double- and Triple-A with 15 home runs and 40 RBI.
The Angels don’t have a prospect ranked in the Top 100 and most of the organization’s best are in the lower levels of the minors. Outfielder Jordyn Adams, 24, is ranked No. 23 in the system while right-handers Kelvin Caceres, 24, and Davis Daniel, 26, are 27th and 28th, respectively.
Sacramento hasn’t named a starter for Saturday’s game while Salt Lake gives the ball to veteran right-hander Zach Plesac, signed as a free agent by the Angels in January and optioned to the Bees in early March. Plesac made five starts for the Cleveland Guardians last season with a 7.59 ERA and 1.969 WHIP in 21.1 innings while posting a 6.08 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 94.2 innings at Triple-A Columbus.
