The Worcester Red Sox play their home opener at Polar Park on Tuesday afternoon, opening a 6-game series with the Buffalo Bisons
The Worcester Red Sox (2-1) get set for their home opener on Tuesday afternoon as they open a six-game series against the Buffalo Bisons (1-2) at Polar Park. The top prospect of the parent Boston Red Sox prospect at Worcester is 24-year-old right-hander Richard Fitts, acquired from the New York Yankees in December. MLB Pipeline ranks Fitts No. 12 in the Boston system. Catcher Nathan Hickey (No. 18), a fifth-round pick in 2021, is 2-for-8 with a homer and two RBI in two games. The Bisons have left-hander Ricky Tiedemann, ranked 28th in the Top 100 and No. 1 for the Toronto Blue Jays, and infielder Orelvis Martinez (No. 86 in the top 100. No. 2 in the organization), who is off to a 2-for-11 start.

The Red Sox took two of three over the weekend at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Veteran infielder Romy Gonzalez, claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox in January, was 4-for-13 at Lehigh Valley with two homers and five RBI. David Hamilton, a 26-year-old middle infielder ranked No. 22 in Boston’s chain, also hit two home runs in the series.
Buffalo salvaged the finale of their three-game opening series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Sunday. The Bisons hit just .222/.336/.404 in the series. Shortstop Leo Jimenez, the fifth-ranked prospect in the Toronto organization, played in two of the games, going 1-for-7 with a pair of walks.
Worcester had not named a starter for Tuesday while the Bisons give the ball to Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodríguez. The 27-year-old signed with the Blue Jays in February and allowed one run on two hits in spring training before being optioned to Buffalo on March 27. Rodríguez did not play last year because of a contract dispute with Japan’s Chinichi Dragons.
