Boston University and Cornell square off on the Charles River on Saturday while MIT rows against Wellesley as the spring women’s rowing season opens
Boston University lost the Patriot League title last year on a tiebreaker and rows its first spring event of the women’s rowing season on Saturday on Boston’s Charles River when it takes on Cornell from the Ivy League. At the same event, MIT and Wellesley race along with the lightweights from BU. Wellesley claimed its second consecutive Division III national championship in 2023 after winning the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference crown and took first place in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight events at the Washington College Invitational on March 22 in Chestertown, Maryland. Cornell competes in the Ivy League while MIT is also part of the Patriot League.

The Terriers bring back two All-Patriot League rowers in first-teamer Susan Cook, second-teamer Kat Robbins and second-team coxswain Trisha Jaggi and tied Navy on points at the Patriot League championships last year, losing the NCAA tournament bid on a tiebreaker. The Big Red was eighth in the Ivy League and returns All-Ivy Leaguer Ellie Bijeau.
The Engineers placed fifth at the Patriot League championships a season ago and was scheduled to host Coast Guard and Iona a week ago before the meet was cancelled. The Blue piled up 54 points to outpace Wesleyan at last year’s NCAA championships. Anya Hanitchak rows stroke in the Varsity Eight boat with Colette Kennedy as the coxswain.
