Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets return to Citi Field on Saturday after a fiery opening-day contest that ended with a Milwaukee win
That escalated quickly. The Milwaukee Brewers (1-0) and New York Mets (0-1) are back at Citi Field in New York on Saturday for the second game of their season-opening three-game series after tempers flares in Milwaukee’s opening-day win on Friday. Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins toppled New York second baseman Jeff McNeil on a play at second base. McNeil responded angrily as the benches and dugouts cleared, but no punches were thrown. The Brewers, the defending National League Central Division champions, won their opener for the first time since 2021 while New York had won its previous two opening games.

Freddy Peralta, masterful in his first career opening-day start, made one mistake — a first-inning home run served up to Starling Marte. It was the only hit he allowed in six innings while striking out eight. Abner Uribe, filling in for injured All-Star closer Devin Williams, worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second career save and Christian Yelich homered in the win.
Jose Quintana couldn’t get out of the fifth for New York, coming out after 85 pitches with two outs in the inning. He allowed two runs on six hits to take the loss. The Mets had just three baserunners, losing one when catcher William Contreras picked DJ Stewart off first base. Stewart worked a walk after Marte’s homer.
Right-hander Luis Severino, signed as a free agent last winter, makes his Mets debut after nine years with the New York Yankees. He was 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA and 1.646 WHIP in 89.1 innings last season. It is also a debut for Milwaukee left-hander DL Hall, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in the Corbin Burnes trade. Last season with Baltimore, Hall worked in 18 relief appearances with a 3.26 ERA and 1.190 WHIP in 19.1 innings, fanning 23.
