Iowa’s legendary Caitlin Clark looks to cap off her career with a national championship with unbeaten South Carolina standing in the way
Irresistable force, meet immovable object. Caitlin Clark leads Iowa (34-4) into its second straight NCAA women’s basketball tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. The Hawkeyes take on top overall seed South Carolina (37-0) and are the last team to beat the Gamecocks, a 77-73 triumph at last year’s Final Four in Dallas. South Carolina is in its fourth consecutive Final Four and sixth overall while looking to add a third national championship to its wins in 2017 and 2022. Iowa is in its third Final Four and seeks the program’s first national title. Clark, who will forego her final year of eligibility to enter the WNBA draft, is the all-time leading scorer in Division I history, men’s or women’s, with 3,921 points.

Iowa hung on for a 71-69 victory over UConn in Friday night’s semifinal behind 23 points from Hannah Stuelke. Clark finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, with 17 of her points coming in the second half. She leads the team with averages of 31.7 points, 9.0 assists and 7.3 boards while Stuelke scores 14.1 points per game.
Kamilla Cardoso finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Ashlyn Watkins came off the bench to grab 20 boards as the Gamecocks pulled away from NC State in the second half for a 78-59 semifinal victory on Friday night. Cardoso averages 14.3 points and 9.5 rebounds and MiLaysia Fulwiley puts up 11.8 points per game.
The programs have met just twice previously and are 1-1 against each other. The Hawkeyes beat South Carolina at last year’s Final Four while the Gamecocks beat Iowa at the Hilton Head Island Super Shootout on Dec. 28, 1989, in the only other matchup.
