The meeting marks the first leg of the quarterfinals between the two sides. The Crew advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to a 2-1 aggregate finish over the Houston Dynamo in the round of 16. Columbus beat Houston 1-0 on March 6 at Shell Energy Stadium in the first leg, thanks to a 96th-minute finish from Alexandru Matan. Then, the Crew hosted the Dynamo to a 1-1 finish on March 12 in the second leg at Lower.com Field. Cucho Hernández scored the reigning MLS champion’s lone goal in draw, which put the Crew through to the next round.

Meanwhile, Tigres UANL beat Orlando City 4-2 on aggregate in the round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The club from Monterrey scored all four of its goals in the second leg at home, with Marcelo Flores, André-Pierre Gignac and Sebastián Córdova all getting on the scoresheet.
