Jiyai Shin an unlikely co-leader entering Sunday’s final round of the LPGA Tour Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship at Palos Verdes Golf Club in suburban Los Angeles

Jiyai Shin last played a full LPGA Tour schedule in 2013 but came to southern California this weekend for the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship on a sponsor’s exemption. The event’s namesake, Pak, was a pioneer for South Korean players on the LPGA Tour and won 25 events on tour, including five major championships, between 1998-2010. Shin had the low score of the day on moving day Saturday with a bogey-free, eight-under-par 63 and shares the lead entering Sunday’s final round with Alison Lee. Lee and Shin vaulted into the lead when defending champion Ruoning Yin took a triple-bogey on the 18th on Saturday to fall into a tie for third at seven-under.

Gabriela Ruffels soared up the leaderboard with a 65 on Saturday and shares third place with Yin, Nelly Korda and second-round leader Malia Nam, who shot a 72 on Saturday. Gemma Dryburgh, Allisen Corpuz, Charley Hull, Jasmine Suwannapura and Mao Saigo are at six-under-par for the tournament, tied for seventh.

The tournament, known as the DIO Implant LA Open the last two years, launched in 2018 and moved from Los Angeles’ Wilshire Country Club to Palos Verdes Golf Club in suburban L.A. in 2023. Players are competing for the winner’s share of $300,000 from the tournament-record $2 million purse as well as 500 points in the Race to the CME Globe standings.

Shin entered Saturday seven strokes off Nam’s pace while Lee, a former UCLA golfer, enters Sunday looking for her first LPGA Tour victory.
