    Unbeaten Germany has already locked 1st place in Group B, faces a China squad desperate for a win in the group stage finale on Tuesday

    Germany (3-0-0, 9 points) has won Group B at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championships after beating Sweden on Monday. The Germans close out the group stage of the tournament on Tuesday morning at Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York, against China (1-1-1, 3 points), which can assure itself a spot in the knockout round with a regulation victory. The Chinese are one point ahead of Denmark and two up on Japan, with those teams meeting later on Tuesday. Denmark owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over China, while Japan loses a tiebreaker to China. The top three teams in Group B advance to the medal round while the bottom two face relegation back to Division 1A next year.

    Franziska Feldmeier broke a scoreless tie 8:06 into the third period and German goalie Sandra Abstreiter of Ottawa in the PWHL made it stand up with 32 saves in Germany’s 1-0 victory over Sweden on Monday. Jule Schiefer leads Germany with two goals in the tournament, with Lilli Welcke’s three points topping the squad. Abstreiter has allowed just two goals in three games, with a .973 save percentage.

    On Sunday, China missed a chance to secure a spot in the knockout round with a 2-1 shootout loss to Denmark. Minghui Kong scored with 1:51 remaining to force overtime before the Danes prevailed 2-0 in the shootout. Kong has two of China’s four non-shootout goals.

    China is back in the top division of women’s international hockey for the first time since 2009 and its best finish at the worlds is a pair of fourth-place nods in 1994 and 1997. Germany’s high-water mark was its fourth-place finish in 2017.
