Trying to hold onto the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, the Philadelphia Flyers host the New York Islanders on Monday night.
The Philadelphia Flyers (36-29-10) have seven games left in their regular season, and every one will be crucial from here on out starting with a home game against the New York Islanders (31-27-15) on Monday night. Entering play on Monday the Flyers do sit in playoff position – but barely. They’re currently the second and final Wild Card team in the Eastern Conference, while simultaneously being just outside of the divisional playoff picture. In the Metropolitan Division, they’re tied with the Washington Capitals for third place with 82 standings points, although the Capitals have two games in hand.

With tiebreakers they’re technically the fourth-place team in the division, making them the second Wild Card team. That margin looking down (they’re seven points back for the top Wild Card spot, with the Tampa Bay Lightning having two games in hand) is also thin – just two points up on the Detroit Red Wings who have a game in hand.
This will be the third and final meeting of the year between the Islanders and Flyers. They split the first two meetings in New York back in late November. Both were close games – the Islanders won 3-2 in regulation in the first one, then the Flyers came back with a 1-0 shutout win three days later.
