    Last-second Latvia looks to remain unbeaten in Group B play when it faces Kazakhstan at Ostrava Arena in Czechia on Tuesday

    Latvia (2-0-0, 4 points), coming off its first-ever IIHF World Championships medal in 2023, takes on Kazakhstan (1-1-0, 3 points) on Tuesday in a Group B matchup from Ostrava Arena in Czechia. The Latvians opened the tournament with consecutive overtime victories while the Kazakhs come off a lopsided loss. Latvia, serving as the event’s co-host along with Finland last year, finished third in its group before upsetting Sweden and the United States to take a stunning bronze medal. Kazakhstan’s high-water mark in IIHF World Championships play came with a 10th-place finish in 2021 and it placed 11th a year ago.

    Latvian captain Kaspars Daugaviņš scored with just 1.9 seconds left in overtime on Sunday to deliver a 3-2 victory over France. Latvia took the lead in the third period on a goal from Roberts Bukarts at 11:48 of the third period before surrendering the equalizer with 3:09 remaining in regulation. Rodrigo Ābols also lit the lamp for Latvia.

    Kazakhstan, outshot 42-16, took a 6-2 drubbing from Slovakia on Sunday. It already trailed 3-0 before Alikhan Asetov scored 3:02 into the second period. Alikhan Omirbekov netted the other goal for the Kazakhs at 11:05 of the third. Andrey Shutov allowed all six goals before he was pulled in favor of Nikita Boyarkin for the final 14:54.

    Daugaviņš, who plays for Dukla Michalovce in Slovakia, leads Latvia with three goals and five points while Ä€bols, from Sweden’s Rögle BK, found the twine twice thus far in the tournament. Elvis Merzļikins of the Columbus Blue Jackets has done all the work in net thus far. Five different players have single goals for Kazakhstan while Samat Daniyar of Kazakh club Barys Astana leads the team with three points, all assists.
