Ligue 1 relegation candidate Metz is in the hunt for an upset as AS Monaco comes to town in Week 27

Three points at home to AS Monaco on Saturday could be enough to temporarily lift Metz out of Ligue 1’s relegation places as the French top flight enters the business end of the 2023-24 campaign. However, Les Monegasques have proved infallible on the road of late and will travel to the Stade Saint-Symphorien on the back of three straight road victories against stiff opposition. Adi Hutter’s men have suddenly unearthed a rich vein of away form and defeated Nice, Lens and Strasbourg in their last three trips, hoping to make it four on the bounce by beating Metz for the seventh straight time.

Granted, one of those Monaco wins over Les Grenats was via a penalty shootout in the Coupe de France several years ago, but the point stands this particular rivalry has been fairly one-sided of late.

That being said, Hutter did have to lean on an Aleksandr Golovin brace to pull his side back into the lead after Lamine Camara scored after just four minutes to put Metz ahead at the Stade Louis II in October.

Monaco is unbeaten in its last four outings, though a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Lorient just before the international break was something of a dampener to its prospects:

Former Chelsea flop Tiemoue Bakayoko came to the visitor’s rescue with a 95th-minute equalizer a fortnight ago, preventing Monaco from moving up to second in the standings.

As things stand, the outfit from the French Riviera remains third in the table and one point below Brest, while Paris Saint-Germain is acres ahead in first and a shoo-in for the Ligue 1 crown.

That being said, Monaco is due to visit Brest in three weeks’ time, and a win away at Metz over the weekend will put Hutter & Co. in an optimal position to leap up to second should they win.
