A stunning comeback on Friday lifted Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard (28-0) to the Michigan Division 2 girls basketball championship game, where it takes on Detroit Edison (22-3) on Saturday night. The Irish haven’t won a state title since 1993, when it took the Class D crown, while the Pioneers of Edison are after a second state title in three years after taking the Division 2 championship in 2022. Gabriel Richard entered the tournament ranked No. 1 by the Michigan Associated Press while Edison held the No. 3 spot in the final regular-season poll. For the Irish, this marks their first visit to the state tournament since that 1993 run.

Gabriel Richard trailed second-ranked Grand Rapids West Catholic by four with 10 seconds remaining before Vanessa Rodriguez hit three free throws. Charlotte Miller then canned a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Irish a 35-33 victory on Friday. Rodriguez finished with 13 points in the win while Miller’s game-winner was her lone made 3 on the night.
The Pioneers needed no such drama to eliminate No. 4 Negaunee by a 63-46 margin on Friday night. Isis Johnson-Musah led Edison with 16 points and seven assists, with Myana Cooksey adding 13 points and Devin Hagemann dropping 11.
Edison also won the Division 2 title in 2019 and Class C championships in 2017 and 2018 before the Michigan High School Athletic Association changed its classifications.
