The top riders in the world in motocross battle it out in the first race of the MXGP Sardinia today.
Jorge Prado dominated qualifying with over a six-second lead over the rest of the field heading into today’s race. During qualifying there was an early collision that caused a crash. That coupled with a slow start in the first turn set the stage for someone other than Prado to finish with the best time in qualifying. He was able to maneuver those challenges to come out on top. Tim Gajser qualified in second place, Jeffrey Herlings in third, Jeremy Seewer in fourth and Paulis Jonass in fifth place. Now all four of those riders will challenge Prado and attempt to come out on top in the first MXGP race in Sardinia today.

Those five make up five of the six top points getters in the standings to start the MXGP season. Prado is way out in front with 124 points to hold a commanding 11-point lead early in the season over the rest of the field.
Gajser (113 points) is in second place with an even bigger lead over the rest of the field behind him heading into today. He holds a 21 point lead over the rest of the field in the MXGP standings.
Behind Prado and Gajser are Romain Febvre (92 points) in third place, Herlings (85 points) in fourth place, Jonass (79 points) in fifth place and Seewer (75 points) in sixth place just on the outside looking into the top five. He has the opportunity to close that gap today with a strong finish in Sardinia.
