The Rochester Red Wings and Syracuse Mets open their International League season at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse on Friday afternoon
The Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, open the 2024 International League season on Friday afternoon with a visit to the Syracuse Mets at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, New York. The Red Wings finished last season with a 66-80 record while Syracuse, the Triple-A club for the New York Mets, were 61-85. Matt LeCroy enters his fourth season managing at Rochester and in the Nationals’ organization as a minor-league manager since 2009, save for a two-year stint as Washington’s bullpen coach in 2014-15. Dick Scott took over the managerial reins for the Mets last season, his first back in the dugout since 1997 after more than 20 years in a variety of front-office roles.

Rochester’s top prospect is 21-year-old outfielder James Wood. Ranked No. 14 overall by MLB Pipeline, Wood is the No. 2 prospect in the Nationals’ system after slashing .262/.353/.520 across High-A and Double-A last season, slugging 26 home runs with 91 RBI and finishing with 62 extra-base hits.
Infielder Luisangel Acuña, the 22-year-old brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., falls in at No. 64 on the MLB Pipeline Top 100 and is No. 3 in the Mets’ organization. He comes to Syracuse after a season in Double-A in which he slashed .294/.359/.410 with nine homers and 63 RBI to go with 57 steals in 67 attempts. He was acquired in the trade that sent right-hander Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers last July.
No opening-day starter was announced for Syracuse while the Red Wings will give the ball to right-hander Joan Adon. The 25-year-old split last season between Rochester and Washington and was 3-5 in 17 starts for the Red Wings, posting a 4.62 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 87.2 innings.
