Top-seeded Kentucky is challenged by South Carolina in the SEC Championship of tennis today.
South Carolina entered the SEC Championship Tournament in men’s tennis as the 11th and with very low expectations. The Gamecocks have shocked the field knocking off three top-six seeds on their way to the championship match with top-seeded Kentucky for the SEC Championship this season. This has been one of the most improbable runs in recent tournament history. The Wildcats have showcased why they earned the top seed in the tournament winning both of their tournament matches 4-0 defeating both ninth-seeded Arkansas in the third round and then the host of the tournament this season, 13-seeded LSU to punch their ticket to the championship match today.

If the Gamecocks emerge as SEC Champions in tennis this season they will have defeated the six seed, third seed, second seed and number one seed on that journey. Very few teams, let alone double-digit seeds, can claim to beat the top three seeds in a tournament in succession to win a conference tournament.
The Gamecocks started this run with a win over sixth-seeded Alabama with a 4-2 victory. After that upset they defeated third-seeded Mississippi State 4-2 and second-seeded Tennessee 4-2. The Gamecocks are also playing for the first SEC Tournament Championship in school history today.
For the Wildcats, this would be the school’s second straight conference tournament championship and third overall. They won it all last season and are in a position to become the first back-to-back tournament champions since the Bulldogs win two in a row in 2018 and 2019.
