The 2-time USFL champion Birmingham Stallions go to Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday to take on the Michigan Panthers in a battle of 1-0 United Football League teams
The Michigan Panthers (1-0) picked up a dramatic win in their United Football League opener last week. On Sunday, the Panthers host the two-time USFL champion Birmingham Stallions (1-0) at Ford Field in Detroit in their first USFL Conference matchup of the season. The United Football League came about last summer with the merger of the USFL and XFL spring football circuits, with four teams from each coming together to form the new UFL. The surviving clubs were split into the USFL and XFL conferences, with the top two finishers in each set to advance to the conference finals after a 10-game regular season.

In a storybook ending on March 30, Michigan kicker Jake Bates set a UFL record with a 64-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to lift the Panthers to an 18-16 win over the visiting St. Louis Battlehawks. It was the first career field-goal attempt for Bates, who kicked at Texas State and Arkansas for three seasons, handling nothing but kickoffs.
Birmingham quarterback Matt Corral found Deon Cain for a 39-yard touchdown pass with three seconds left in the first half to tie the game 11-11, springboarding the Stallions to a 27-14 win over the host Arlington Renegades. Corral was 12-of-21 for 201 yards while C.J. Marable ran for 67 yards and a score.
The Stallions are coached by Skip Holtz, who is now 18-3 in his third season. Mike Nolan took over for Michigan last season and was 4-6 and led the team to a playoff berth after replacing longtime NFL coach Jeff Fisher following a 2-8 inaugural season in 2022.
