The IIHF World Championships begins on Friday and the United States will take on Sweden in the first game of Group B play. The Americans come into the tournament looking for better results after they have finished in fourth place in the last two championships. Last year they won Group A with 20 points but were shocked by Germany in the semifinals in overtime. They would then be upset again in the third-place game as Latvia beat them 4-3 in overtime. It was a disappointing end to a tournament that they had championship hopes for. It isn’t going to be easy in their first game as they take on a Swedish team that finished just behind them in the group standings last year. The Americans beat Sweden in overtime in their meeting last year.

The Swedish team will be looking to avenge that loss as they try and take control of the group on Friday.
Their only loss in the tournament group stage last year was to the Americans and it kept them in second place in the group.
The Swedish team was then upset by Latvia in the first round of the knockout stage 3-1. It was also a disappointing end to the tournament for Sweden and they are trying to have a better showing this year.
