Czechia looks for its third straight bronze medal when it faces Finland on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championships at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York. Czechia hadn’t medaled in six appearances at the women’s worlds before breaking through for the bronze in 2022, repeating its third-place finish last year in Brampton, Ontario. Finland, one of just three national teams to compete in all 23 tournaments, is looking for its 15th medal at the women’s worlds and its first since taking silver in 2019. The Finns have won a record 13 bronze medals at the event which has been dominated by the United States and Canada since its inception in 1990.

Czechia beat Germany 1-0 in its semifinal on Thursday before dropping a 4-0 decision to Canada in Saturday’s semifinal. Natálie Mlýnková leads the Czechs with four goals and six points while Daniela PejÅ¡ová has lit the lamp twice in the tournament. Klára Peslarová has done all the goaltending, with a 2.67 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
Finland got to the third-place game with a 3-1 victory over Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Thursday before absorbing a 5-0 semifinal defeat on Saturday at the hands of the United States. Petra Nieminen has three goals while Susanna Tapani put five points on the scoresheet so far with two games and three assists. Sanni Ahola has been in net for five games with a .909 save percentage and 2.82 GAA.
In the second game of the tournament back on April 3, Czechia blanked Finland 4-0 in Group A play. Mlýnková, Adéla Šapovalivová and Klára Hymlarová each recorded a goal and an assist while Peslarová stopped 21 shots to record the shutout.
