The Detroit Tigers put their pitching on display in an opening-day win on Thursday and look to clinch a series win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday

After an off day, the Detroit Tigers (1-0) and Chicago White Sox (0-1) resume their season-opening three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. After a strong September last season, Detroit has playoff aspirations in 2024. The Tigers beefed up their starting rotation with the additions of right-handers Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty and added outfield depth by trading for outfielder Mark Canha. The White Sox come off just the third 100-loss season in franchise history in rebuilding mode. Their big-ticket signing was veteran right-hander Erick Fedde, who pitched in Korea last season, and they traded former All-Star right-hander Michael Soroka.

Tarik Skubal combined with three relievers for a three-hit shutout in Detroit’s 1-0 win on Thursday. Skubal struck out six in six innings and Jason Foley fanned the final two hitters to earn the save. Andy Ibáñez’s sacrifice fly in the second inning produced the game’s only run.

Left-hander Garrett Crochet’s first big-league start was wasted. He struck out eight in six innings, allowing five hits. But Chicago never got a runner beyond first base and drew no walks while striking out 11 times.

Soroka, acquired from the Atlanta Braves, makes his White Sox debut on Saturday. After missing two full seasons with injuries, he made seven appearances last season with a 6.40 ERA and 1.485 WHI in 32.1 innings. Maeda was 6-8 in 20 starts for the Minnesota Twins, pitching to a 4.23 ERA and 1.169 WHIP with 117 strikeouts in 104.1 innings.
