The Cleveland Guardians open their home schedule at Progressive Field against the struggling Chicago White Sox on Monday

The Cleveland Guardians (7-2) opened the season with a strong road trip and head home to Progressive Field on Monday for their home opener. The Guardians host the Chicago White Sox (1-8), who come off a four-game sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals. Cleveland’s series finale against the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis was postponed by rain and it comes into its home opener with a four-game winning streak and a one-game lead in the American League Central. The White Sox’ 1-8 start is the second-worst in franchise history, topped only by an 0-9 stumble out of the gate in 1968. Chicago’s 101 losses last season matched the third-most in the history of the club, exceeded only by the 56-106 team in 1970 and the 1932 club that finished 49-102.

Steven Kwan went 15-for-43 on the opening trip for Cleveland, scoring 10 runs. Five-time All-Star third baseman José Ramirez drove in seven runs and the pitching staff recorded a 2.28 ERA. But the Guardians lost ace Shane Bieber, who will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Chicago hitters have combined for a .196/.266/.318 slash line thus far and have scored only 16 runs in nine games, the fewest in baseball. Gavin Sheets bucked the trend with a 6-for-18 start but Andrew Benintendi is 5-for-36 without an extra-base hit thus far.

Right-hander Triston McKenzie takes the ball for his second start of the season for Cleveland. Limited to just four appearances last season, McKenzie took the loss at Seattle on April 1 after allowing five runs, four earned, in just 3.1 innings. The White Sox did not name a starter.
