Palou, who has won three championships in the last four seasons, is attempting to become just the fourth IndyCar driver to three-peat. He would join Ted Horn (1946-48), Sebastien Bourdais (2004-07) and Dario Franchitti (2009-11) on that list. Palou will be joined on the front row by Scott McLaughlin, with Colton Herta and Will Power on Row 2 and Rinus Veekay and Nolan Siegel starting on the third row.

Kyle Kirkwood, who won last month in Long Beach, will start from the 18th position on the grid as he tries to make up ground on Palou in the early-season standings. The rest of the top 10 on the grid include Christian Lundgaard, Pato O’Ward, Josef Newgarden and Kyffin Simpson.

There is another carrot dangling for Palou later this month as he will once again try to add the Indianapolis 500 to his career resume. Barber Motorsports Park opened in 2003 and is a 2.38-mile course with 17 turns. O’Ward set the race lap record there in 2021 with a 1:06.8182 turn around the circuit.
