New Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant takes on his former team, the Delhi Capitals, on Monday.

The Lucknow Super Giants made Indian Premier League history when they purchased wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant for a record amount of $3.14 million after he was let go by the Delhi Capitals after the 2024 season. The schedule makers created an interesting opening match for the two sides set for Monday when the Super Giants head to Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam to take on Delhi with Pant now captaining the Lucknow side. The teams finished last season with identical 7-7-0 records and missed the knockout stage.

The Super Giants on Sunday signed experienced all-rounder Shardul Thakur to replace injured left-arm fast bowler Mohsin Khan. During the auction, the team added pace bowler Akash Deep and retained Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni, with Pant giving the team new leadership and a stronger batting attack. The club was augmented by foreign players David Miller, Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh.

For the second straight season, England white-ball captain Harry Brook pulled out of his deal with the Capitals, a move that could trigger Brook being banned from the IPL for two years. All-rounder Axar Patel is a first-time captain and Delhi replaced Pant with experienced wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul during the auction. The top-order batting will be crucial for the Capitals, with Jake Fraser-McGuck, Faf du Plessis and Rahul expected to provide strong starts.

Lucknow is in its fourth IPL campaign and last season was the first time it missed the knockout stage, though it has never reached the final. Delhi is one of the original clubs from the IPL’s 2008 debut and has made the playoffs six times, capped by a final loss in 2020.
