The defending Indian Premier League champion Kolkata Knight Riders open the 2025 season at home on Saturday
The Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions of the Indian Premier League, host the opening match of the new season on Saturday when they host Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India. Kolkata went 9-3-2 in Group A play last season, finishing first in the group before beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 1 and the Final to claim its third IPL title and its first since 2014. The Royal Challengers placed second in Group B and lost to the Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator match for a fourth-place finish. Bengaluru has made the playoffs nine times since the league launched in 2008, with three runner-up finishes, most recently in 2016.

Kolkata added left-arm medium pacer Chetan Sakariya to the roster on Sunday to replace injured Umran Malik. Sakariya has represented India in an ODI and two T20Is and has taken 20 wickets in 19 IPL matches. Batsman Ajinkya Rahane captains the squad and the Knight Riders acquired Vekatesh Iyer for a record $27.6 million. Other top players for the club include Indian T20I regular Rinku Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine.
Rajat Patidar captains the Royal Challengers, who feature a trio of power-play bowlers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Krunal Pandya and Josh Hazlewood. Patidar, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma and Tim David are proven performers in the death overs (16 through 20) but the team can struggle at home with the stadium’s short boundaries and propensity for high scoring.
The IPL is the richest cricket league in the world and holds an exclusive March-May window on the International Cricket Council that results in fewer international competitions during its season.
