Teams off to sluggish IPL starts meet as Sunrisers Hyderabad visit the defending champion Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (1-2-0, 2 points) are off to a slow start in defense of their 2024 Indian Premier League title and return home to Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India on Thursday to host Sunrisers Hyderabad (1-2-0, 2 points) in a rematch of last season’s final. The Knight Riders split a pair of road matches, while Hyderabad has dropped two straight matches since a crushing performance at the bat in its opener. Kolkata’s 2024 title was its third since the IPL debuted in 2008 and its first since 2014, while the Sunrisers finished second last year in its first appearance in the final since 2018. Hyberabad’s lone title came in 2016.

The Knight Riders were easily chased down on Monday by the Mumbai Indians 121/2-116, with the hosts claiming the victory with 43 balls to spare. Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s 26 runs on 16 balls was the top performance for the Kolkata batsmen while Ramandeep Singh had 22 on 12. Andre Russell claimed the only two wickets in a 2-35 performance in 2.5 overs.

The Sunrisers dropped a 166/3-163 decision at the Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam on Sunday for its second straight loss since posting 286/6 in its opener on March 23. Aniket Verma turned in a strong 74 on 41 balls with six 6s and Henrich Klaasen notched 32 on 19. Zeeshan Ansari bowled a 3-42 in four overs, but those were the only wickets taken by Hyderabad in the loss.

Quinton De Kock leads the Knight Riders with 102 runs, but 97 of those came in a single match, while Ajinkua Rahane is next up with 85. Vanun Chakaravarthy and Vaibhav Arora have each taken three wickets so far, while Moeen Ali posted a 5.75 econ rate in his lone match. Travis Head’s 136 runs tops the Sunrisers, with Verma posting 117 with 12 6s thus far. Ansari and Harshal Patel have three wickets each, with Ansari’s 8.00 econ rate the best for the struggling group of bowlers.
