Kentucky and Virginia meet Thursday in Clearwater as the teams take the field for the Shriner’s Children’s Clearwater Invitational.

The 2025 college softball season is underway and on Thursday, the Virginia Cavaliers will take on the No. 24 Kentucky Wildcats in the Shriner’s Children’s Clearwater Invitational where the teams will play five games over four days in the Florida sunshine. Coming into the tournament, the Cavaliers had a record of 3-2 so far after kicking off their season at the Gamecock Invitational last weekend. The team opened the tournament with a pair of losses to host South Carolina (7-6, 5-4) before winning the next three games with the finale being a big 12-0 win over Saint Francis (PA) in just five innings. Kelly Ayer led the Cavaliers with three RBI from her one hit on the day while M.C. Eaton added two to the stat sheet in the team’s big win.

The Wildcats had a strong start to their season, finishing 4-1 at the NFCA Lead-Off Classic last weekend, also in Clearwater. The team’s only loss came in the final game of the tournament, losing to No. 8 Duke in a 6-3 defeat. The Blue Devils used a strong four-run third inning to propel themselves to win after a slew of errors from the Wildcats’ defense. Alexia Lacatena and Sydney Langdon combined to give up two earned runs in the game, but the other three came off of fielding errors. Sarah Haendiges came in to pitch the final inning for Kentucky and struck out one. McKenzie Bump and Peyton Plotts each collected an RBI in the loss while Allie Blum led the team in hitting, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

With so much season left to play and conference games still being several weeks out, the teams will use this weekend to work on the problem spots that ended up being crucial in last week’s losses.
