We're down to the elite eight and for the first game of the divisional round of the NFL playoffs will be a matchup of the Aaron's. That's in Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams who travel to take on the Green Bay Packers in what should be a bitterly cold battle at Lambeau Field. Honestly, the Rams probably shouldn't even be in this game but they defied all odds. Their opponent last week, the Seattle Seahawks, were heavily favored because QB Jared Goff could barely throw the football as he is still recovering from broken thumb surgery. Also at one point, Donald was taken out of the game with a rib injury but he eventually returned to continue terrorizing Russell Wilson.

They won on the backs of their defense and a tremendous game on the ground led by RB Cam Akers. Their 30-20 win wasn't all that close and Seattle subsequently fired their offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer even though Wilson was reportedly unhappy with the move. That's how good this Rams defense is even though head coach Sean McVay is touted as an offensive genius. The Rams have the number one overall defense in the NFL under first year defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

Last year he was the linebackers coach on a bad Denver Broncos team. But he has more than kept this Rams D afloat by picking up where legendary defensive coordinator Wade Phillips left off. Many are already interested in the rookie coach including the Houston Texans who are reportedly are going to interview him. It is a big criticism that Staley is just not ready to become a head coach in this league at 38. But the same was said about McVay and he is already one of the best coaches in the league at 34.

The Rams have the fourth best pass defense led by the sensational Jalen Ramsey who is proving he was worth the astronomical cost he commanded. They also have the third best run defense in the league of course behind Donald. Part of that elite run defense is Michael Brockers who right before the playoffs started went on the COVID-19 reserve list. He came back for the Seahawks game and lifted this defense tremendously when Donald went out. Donald said he felt great to go this week and with WR Cooper Kupp questionable and this offense in general is questionable, this defense will need to step up like they never have before against Rodgers and the Packers.

If the Rams take down this offense then Staley deserves every job opening in the NFL. The Packers are the number one seed in the NFL for a reason. Of the playoff teams left, only the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills averaged more yards per game than the Packers in the regular season and Green Bay was in the top-five in that category. If you don't want to see the Chiefs win back-to-back, this might be the team you want representing the NFC in the Super Bowl.

The Rams will be a large underdog again for the same reasons they were against the Seahawks. The biggest reason being it is very unlikely that they can keep up with the opposing offense. They defied the odds once in the Wild Card but the Packers offense is just even better. Can the biggest underdog in the NFC playoffs take down the number one seed in sub-freezing temps? To be fair, when the number one offense squares off against the number one defense, the cliche usually rings true. Defense wins championships.
