Northwestern will look to pick up its first conference win on Tuesday night on the road against Michigan State in men’s college soccer.

On Tuesday night, DeMartin Stadium will welcome visiting side Northwestern as the team squares off against home side Michigan State in a men’s Big Ten soccer matchup. The Wildcats bring an overall record of 5-4 into the game, but they also bring a three-game losing streak, as the team has yet to earn a Big Ten win. Most recently, Northwestern played No. 19 Maryland at home. Although the Wildcats were able to keep the game close, they ultimately fell 2-1 to move to 0-3 in conference play. The team’s lone goal was scored by Christopher Thaggard in the second half with assists from Luke Shreiner and Colin McCamy. Rafael Ponce De León made two saves in net on the night, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the strength of the Terps’ offense.

The Spartans are riding high after a big 1-0 win over No. 15 UCLA on Friday to move to 2-1 in conference play and 3-4-2 overall. After falling to Penn State in a 2-1 decision a week before, the team had some kinks to work out ahead of its third ranked match of the season. While UCLA was able to produce 15 shots, quantity does not always beat quality. That was the case for Michigan State, as Jonathan Stout’s goal in the second minute of play was one of excellence, as he put a diving header away off of a Mohamed Saad saved shot. The team tucked in to play some strong defense for the remaining 88 minutes of play and walked away with a win against the Bruins in the teams’ first ever meeting. The win moved the Spartans into third place in the Big Ten standings behind Ohio State (2-0-1) and Maryland (3-0).

The last time Northwestern and Michigan State met was last season and the game resulted in a 2-1 win for the then-No. 20 Spartans over the then-No. 21 Northwestern.
