Colorado has quietly strung together a two-game winning streak, including a 7-3 victory over these same Cubs, and the Rockies are showing enough fight to make Coors Field uncomfortable for a Chicago team that badly needs to reverse course. The Cubs have dropped three straight and gone 3-7 over their last ten games — a stretch that has them eight games back in the NL Central and running out of margin for error.

Troy Johnston is hitting .307 with 66 hits and gives Colorado a legitimate table-setter at the top of the order. Behind him, Hunter Goodman has been one of the more quietly productive power bats in the NL, with 18 home runs, 33 RBI, and 41 runs scored. For Chicago, Ian Happ has crossed the plate 43 times and hit 15 home runs, while Nico Hoerner’s 66 hits give the Cubs a contact anchor they need to get something going offensively. Alex Bregman, at .246 with 66 hits and 30 runs, provides another steady presence in a lineup that has sputtered lately. The Cubs have the talent to turn things around — the question is whether this is the game where it happens.

Game Preview

Eight games back in the NL Central, Chicago cannot afford to keep dropping winnable games on the road. The Cubs are 14-19 away from Wrigley, and a Colorado team that is 14-19 at home represents exactly the kind of opponent they need to beat to stay relevant in the division race. The Rockies, meanwhile, have won two straight and gone 5-5 over their last ten — modest numbers, but enough to suggest they are not simply rolling over for anyone. Coors Field has a way of making every game unpredictable, and both teams have reasons to treat this one seriously.

What to Watch For

Antonio Senzatela has been one of the more overlooked pitching performances in the National League this season. His 2.11 ERA and six wins make him a genuine problem for opposing lineups, and a Cubs offense mired in a cold stretch will need to solve him quickly if Chicago wants to end its skid. Tomoyuki Sugano has also been solid for Colorado at 6 wins and a 4.08 ERA, giving the Rockies rotation depth that belies their record.

On the Chicago side, Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 14 stolen bases give the Cubs a disruptive presence on the bases, and Seiya Suzuki — hitting .247 with 9 home runs and 22 RBI — is capable of providing the kind of extra-base damage that can change a game at altitude. Dansby Swanson’s .180 average has been a concern, but his 7 home runs and 36 runs scored show he can still hurt a team when he connects.

Mickey Moniak, who had been one of Colorado’s more productive bats at .280 with 12 home runs and 28 RBI, is on the injured list with an ankle issue, as are Jordan Beck and Tyler Freeman — absences that thin the Rockies’ lineup but open the door for players like Willi Castro (.266, 3 HR, 22 RBI) and TJ Rumfield (.269, 8 HR, 31 RBI) to carry more of the offensive load.
