The Athletics enter this one with momentum at their backs, having taken two straight after rallying past Milwaukee in their most recent series. That kind of finish — coming from behind to win the rubber match — tends to carry over, and Las Vegas Ballpark has seen some genuine offensive fireworks lately. Henry Bolte launched his first career home run in that Brewers series, and Carlos Cortes and Lawrence Butler each went deep in the decisive game. This is an A’s lineup that can hurt you in multiple ways on any given night.

Colorado arrives having dropped its last game after briefly snapping a four-game skid. The Rockies are not without weapons — Mickey Moniak has 12 home runs and is hitting .280, and Troy Johnston is batting .315 with 69 hits. Hunter Goodman leads the club with 18 home runs and 33 RBI. This is a team that can score, even if the wins haven’t followed consistently.

Gage Jump takes the ball for Oakland, bringing a 2.45 ERA into the start. Colorado has not announced a starter. That pitching uncertainty on the Rockies’ side could be the defining factor early.

Game Preview

At 33-35, the Athletics sit two games back in the AL West and are playing with the urgency of a team that knows the margin for drift is thin. A winning streak, even a short one, changes the texture of a week. Colorado at 26-43 is 18 games back in the NL West, but road games against AL opponents carry their own stakes — wins here matter for individual development and for proving the roster has more to offer than the record suggests.

What to Watch For

Gage Jump is the name to watch on the mound. His 2.45 ERA through the early portion of the season is legitimately impressive, and he carries a 2-1 record into this start. If he can limit Colorado’s contact hitters — Johnston at .315, Willi Castro at .269 — the A’s offense should have enough to handle the rest.

For the Rockies, Mickey Moniak has been one of the more productive hitters on the roster, posting 12 home runs, 28 RBI, and a .280 average. He is listed on the 10-day IL with an ankle injury, however, which removes one of Colorado’s more reliable bats from the equation. Tyler Freeman, also a productive presence at .273 with three home runs and 18 RBI, is listed on the 7-day IL with a concussion. Those absences put more pressure on players like TJ Rumfield (.270, 8 HR, 31 RBI) and Ezequiel Tovar to carry the offensive load.

On the Oakland side, Carlos Cortes is hitting .310 with six home runs and 18 RBI, and he’s been one of the more consistent contributors in the lineup. With Jacob Wilson on the 10-day IL with a shoulder injury, the A’s need players like Cortes and Zack Gelof (.266, 8 HR, 23 RBI) to keep the offense functioning at full capacity.
