The Kansas City Royals (70-67) used their Monday off day to shuffle their roster before welcoming the Los Angeles Angels (64-73) to Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Tuesday night to open a three-game series. Los Angeles wound up splitting a four-game series at the Houston Astros after a loss on Monday afternoon. The Royals, who trail the Seattle Mariners by two-and-a-half games for the final American League wild card spot, activated top prospect Jac Caglianone from the injured list while promoting No. 2 prospect Carter Jensen and right-hander Luinder Avila from Triple-A Omaha, placing second baseman Jonathan India (sprained left wrist) on the 10-day injured list.

Kansas City is chasing its second straight postseason appearance as Caglianone returns after being out since July 27 with a strained left hamstring. Jensen provides depth behind starter Salvador Perez behind the plate and Avila adds bullpen depth. Caglianone hit just .147/.205/.280 with five homers and 10 RBI in 41 games before his injury but had five home runs and 16 RBI in a 16-game rehab assignment at Omaha.

The Angels rallied to tie the game at Houston when Zack Neto and Jo Adell homered in the fourth inning en route to an 8-3 loss to the AL West-leading Astros on Monday. Yusei Kikuchi was roughed up for five runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings in the loss.

Right-hander Michael Lorenzen (5-8) takes the ball for the Royals in the series opener. In 21 starts, the veteran has a 4.62 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 113 innings. Los Angeles, dealing with injuries in the rotation, did not declare a starter for Tuesday night.
