Jake Meyers broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning and Yordan Alvarez provided an insurance run with a laser blast to center field in the eighth inning, as Houston took a 2-0 decision on Tuesday night. Hunter Brown worked six scoreless innings and Josh Hader needed just 10 pitches in a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save. Jose Altuve is hitting .300/.333/.443 with three homers and seven RBIs so far, with Isaac Paredes and Jeremy Peña sharing the club lead with three home runs. Alvarez has 10 RBIs and Meyers snapped an 0-for-9 funk with his go-ahead hit.

The Cardinals had six hits in the loss and Brendan Donovan extended his hitting streak to an MLB-best 11 games with a fourth-inning double. Erick Fedde took the hard-luck loss after allowing a run on six hits over six innings while fanning five. Donovan is slashing .382/.411/.559 with a pair of homers and 11 RBIs, as the sputtering offense is managing just 2.1 runs per game so far.

Left-hander Steven Matz is set to make his first start of the season on Wednesday after five relief outings for St. Louis. He has a 2.31 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 11.2 innings. Right-hander Ronel Blanco (1-1) is scheduled to go for the Astros, coming in with a 6.94 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in three starts and 11.2 innings. He comes off his best outing of the season on Friday with seven strikeouts and two runs allowed in five innings of a win over the Los Angeles Angels.
