The Astros head into the meeting as the second-to-last place team in the American League West standings, courtesy of an overall record of 16-25 so far in the campaign. In the series prior to the one against Oakland, Houston took two out of three games against the Detroit Tigers last week. In game one, the Astros won 5-2 thanks to RBIs from Kyle Tucker, Yordan Álvarez, Jeremy Peña, Alex Bregman and Yainer Díaz. Meanwhile, Framber Valdez went for seven innings on for the Astros, allowing six hits, two runs and striking out four batters in that span.

Then, Houston lost 8-2 in game two at Comerica Park on Saturday. Cristian Javier lasted just over one inning on the mound for the Astros, where he allowing five hits and seven runs in the short amount of the game time.
Finally, the Astros were able to close out the series with a 9-3 win at Comerica Park on Sunday. Tucker hit a two-run home run in the win away from home, while Jake Meyers had three RBIs. Meanwhile, Justin Verlander had eight strikeouts and allowed two runs in seven innings for Houston.
