The Mariners came away with the win in the first game of the series on Thursday, Opening Day. Trent Thornton picked up the win after Luis Gilbert pitched a one-run, seven-inning game. Randy Arozarena and Jorge Polanco homered in the outing, with Polanco’s homer breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. Tyler Soderstrom had two home runs and two RBIs for the Athletics.

Seattle will turn to the No. 3 man in their starting pitching rotation, Bryce Miller, to start the game today. The right-hander finished his spring training with a 1-0 record and a 3.77 ERA with 17 strikeouts. In two years with Seattle, he has a 3.52 ERA after boasting a 2.94 ERA last year with a 12-8 record. He also had 171 strikeouts in 180.1 innings last season.
