Veteran right-hander Zach Elfin gets the ball on opening day as the Orioles begin the season north of the border against the Blue Jays.

After being swept out of the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Baltimore Orioles begin the 2025 Major League Baseball season in Ontario on Thursday afternoon as they take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the first game of a four-game weekend series between the American League East rivals. The Orioles turn to 30-year-old starter Zach Elfin , who won five of his nine starts with Baltimore after being acquired at the trade deadline last season, marking just the second time in his career he has been tabbed the opening day starter. Toronto will counter with their own veteran right-hander Jose Berrios on the mound, his third time getting the ball on opening day for the Jays.

After a blistering spring where he hit five home runs and drove in a team-leading 14 runs, Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle leads an Orioles offense that ranked second in all of baseball last year with 235 home runs and averaged 4.85 runs per game, second best in the AL and fourth overall in MLB. Mountcastle was sidelined for a month late in the season with a wrist injury but hit .381 in six September games to close out the regular season. The 28-year-old Florida native has historically struggled against Berrios going 2-for-22 with both hits off the Jays starter being home runs.

Toronto slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr led the Blue Jays in average, hits, runs, RBIs, doubles and home runs in 2024 and finished one hit shy of 200 for the season. Starting his seventh season with the Jays, Guerrero is a career .288 hitter and has driven in 90 or more runs each of the last four seasons.

The Blue Jays have won four of the last five games against Baltimore at home and scored five or more runs in three of the last four meetings.
