Spencer Strider makes his return to the mound as Braves open mid-week series against the Nationals in a NL East battle

Winners of five of their last seven games, the Atlanta Braves get a boost to their pitching rotation on Tuesday night when Spencer Strider (0-1, 3.60 ERA) makes his first start since mid-April after being placed on the injured list with a hamstring injury as they continue their six-game road trip in the series opener against the Washington Nationals. The Nationals swept the Orioles over the weekend and have won four of their last five games as they send second-year southpaw Mitchell Parker (3-3, 4.32 ERA) to the mound in search of his first win in his last five starts having been roughed up for four or more earned runs in each of his last four outings.

Strider, a fourth-round selection by Atlanta in the 2020 MLB Draft, had a breakout season in 2022, going 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA and made his first All-Star team in 2023 in a season where he posted a career high 281 strikeouts, the second consecutive season he topped the 200-strikeout threshold.

Nationals left fielder James Wood leads the team with 98 total bases this season and comes into this game with at least one hit in 14 of his last 17 games with three multi-hit efforts in his last five appearances. Wood, in his second season in the majors, has already set a career high with 12 home runs and is on pace for his first career 100-RBI season.
