The San Diego Padres go for the opening series win of this four-game set against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.

The San Diego Padres look to go up 3-0 in this four-game opening series against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Even though the Padres have the chance to win this series tonight in this primetime double header on FOX, the Braves are still the -145 favorite on the road. The Braves and Padres had very similar seasons in 2024 with San Diego holding a four-game advantage with both earning a Wild Card playoff spot. These clubs are about as evenly matched as you can get and that was demonstrated perfectly on Friday with San Diego winning 4-3.

Fernando Tatis Jr. gave the Padres a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo shot. The Padres scored another in the second to secure an early 2-0 lead. Marcell Ozuna quickly tied the game in the third with a two-RBI single. Xander Bogaerts quickly retook the lead for the Padres mashing a RBI-double in the bottom of the third. Jarred Kelenic tied the game in the fifth with a solo shot. It wasn’t until the eighth where the Padres got the last laugh with a solo shot from Jake Cronenworth for the go-ahead run in this back-and-forth game. Jackson Merrill was a big factor in this game as well collecting three hits after driving in four runs in the Opening Day 7-4 win for San Diego. Merrill was the runner-up to Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes for NL Rookie of the Year.

Randy Vasquez will get the start when San Diego goes for the series win. Vasquez came over from the Yankees in 2023 for Juan Soto. In his first season in a Padres uniform last season, Vasquez went 4-7 with a 4.87 ERA in 98 innings. Atlanta will try to get in this series by starting Spencer Schwellenbach. The righty is coming off his rookie season in 2024 where he made a strong debut with an 8-7 record with a 3.35 ERA in 123.2 innings.
