Is another pitchers duel on the way when the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies meet for the second game of their three-game National League East series on Wednesday night?

The second series of the year between the National League East foes – the Atlanta Braves (25-28) and Philadelphia Phillies (35-19) – began with a pitchers duel on Tuesday night. In the series opener at Citizens Bank Park the Phillies eked out a 2-0 win, scoring on a second-inning double and eighth inning bases loaded walk behind a dominant performance from a pitching staff that collectively allowed just five hits (nine after the seventh inning), while striking out 11 hitters. Is a similar game in store when the series continues on Wednesday?

Zack Wheeler will get the start for the Phillies in this one, looking to continue what’s been an outstanding season. The righty is 6-1 in 11 starts, with a 2.42 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. Wheeler has struck out 88 hitters in 70.2 innings, including eight strikeouts in 6.2 shutout innings last time out against the Athletics on Friday.

The Braves will counter with righty AJ Smith-Shawver. He’ll be making his ninth start of the year, having gone 3-2 with a 3.67 ERA through the first eight.

At the plate the Phillies may also be without one of their top offensive weapons. First baseman Bryce Harper left Tuesday’s game early after he was hit by a pitch in the elbow. Harper received a post-game X-ray, which was reportedly negative. He was replaced by Edmundo Sosa in the lineup on Tuesday, with Sosa playing third and Alec Bohm moving over to first.
