The Atlanta Braves come off a strong outing on Sunday and hit the road to play the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

Projected fourth starter Spencer Schwellenbach led a strong effort by the pitching staff and the Atlanta Braves (6-2) won their sixth straight Grapefruit League game on Sunday. The Braves on Monday make the trip to Port Charlotte, Florida for a matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays (2-5), who made several trades over the offseason in an effort to get back into contention in the American League East. Atlanta has gone to the playoffs for seven straight seasons, exiting in the Wild Card Series in 2024, while the Rays had a run of five straight postseason appearances end with an 80-82 campaign last season.

The Braves had to reshuffle the rotation when left-hander Max Fried and veteran right-hander Charlie Morton departed in free agency, with Schwellenbach being one of the players expected to play a bigger role after debuting in late May and posting a 3.35 ERA and 1.043 WHIP in 123.2 innings. Cy Young winner Chris Sale is back and the team hopes to get right-hander Spencer Strider back into action after elbow surgery last April. The big free agent addition was left fielder Jurickson Profar, who signed a three-year contract.

Tampa Bay signed free agent infielder Ha-Seong Kim to a two-year contract, but he’s not expected to play until May as he recovers from shoulder surgery. The only other majo-league free agent added was catcher Danny Jansen on a one-year deal. They acquired right-handed starters Alex Faedo (Detroit Tigers) and Joe Boyle (Athletics) in trades and added a bullpen arm in Eric Orze in the deal that sent outfielder Jose Siri to the New York Mets.

Right-hander Drew Rasmussen, who missed most of the last two seasons with elbow problems, makes his first appearance of the spring for the Rays on Monday. Atlanta gives the ball to right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver, who struck out three in two scoreless innings on Wednesday. Austin Riley and Matt Olseon hit back-to-back homers in the first and the Braves cruised to an 11-1 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday, while Tampa Bay couldn’t hold a two-run lead in the ninth and settled for a 5-5 tie with the Minnesota Twins.
