The St. Louis Cardinals hope to avoid losing three in a row when they travel to take on the Cleveland Guardians on Friday.

The Cleveland Guardians host the St. Louis Cardinals for their first and only series this season, starting on Friday. St. Louis is trying to avoid losing three in a row, while the Guardians are coming off a series loss against the Toronto Blue Jays. Things were looking good for the Cardinals in their last series against the Chicago Cubs winning their first two games. But St. Louis got shutout in its last two games of the four-game set to split the series. The Cardinals fell back to 4.5 games out of first place behind the Cubs in the NL Central. The good news for St. Louis is that odds makers expect them to bounce back with a -135 line to win the opener tonight.

St. Louis lost 3-0 on Thursday afternoon in the finale in its first series against its biggest rival this season. The Cubs were coming off a 8-0 win on Wednesday. Chicago got its second-consecutive shutout on Thursday thanks to Shota Imanaga, going five scoreless innings while only giving up one hit. St. Louis’s bats went dormant, only collecting three hits the whole game. Cardinals starter Andre Pallante didn’t even really have a bad day going five innings while giving up two runs. St. Louis will have a good shot at bouncing back in this opener by starting Sonny Gray, who is 7-2 with a 3.72 ERA.

The Guardians also were shutout in the finale of their last series on Thursday afternoon, losing 6-0 against Toronto. Cleveland only had two hits the entire game. Kevin Gausman was just in a different stratosphere going eight scoreless innings while only giving up the two hits. Similarly, Tanner Bibee didn’t pitch poorly at all for Cleveland, with the righty going six innings while only giving up two runs. The Guardians will start Luis Ortiz on Friday night, who is 4-8 with a 4.30 ERA.
