Boston Red Sox head into their home opener against the St. Louis Cardinals off their 1st series win of the new season

The Boston Red Sox (3-4) play at home for the first time this season on Friday when they host the St. Louis Cardinals (4-2) at Fenway Park. Boston comes in with consecutive wins and took a three-game series from the Baltimore Orioles with a victory on Thursday. The Cardinals opened with six straight games at home, sweeping the Minnesota Twins before dropping a three-game set to the Los Angeles Angels. The Red Sox made a big move for the future on Wednesday, signing rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell to an eight-year, $60 million extension that locks him in with the organization through the 2034 season.

Campbell slugged his second homer of the season on Thursday, with Alex Bregman and Triston Casas also hitting two-run shots in Boston’s 8-4 win at Baltimore. Bregman added an RBI double and finished 3-for-5. Wilyer Abreu is off to an 8-for-17 start at the plate with two homers and six RBI while Campbell is 10-for-24 with a pair of homers and four runs driven in.

St. Louis avoided a sweep on Wednesday with a 12-5 victory over the Angels as Iván Herrera became the first catcher in franchise history to hit three home runs in a game. Herrera finished with six RBI and leads the club with eight so far. Lars Nootbaar, meanwhile, is 10-for-24 with a pair of long balls and five RBI.

The Red Sox give the ball to Walker Buehler for the home opener. Buehler, a right-hander signed as a free agent in December, was roughed up for four runs in 4.1 innings in a loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday. The Cardinals go with right-hander Erick Fedde, who allowed a run on two hits over six innings on Saturday to win his first start of the season.
