Winners of nine of their last 12 games, the Detroit Tigers lead the American League Central Division by seven games heading into the weekend as they take on the National League Central Division leading Chicago Cubs for the second game of their three-game series from Comerica Park. The Tigers won Friday night’s series opener behind a dominant performance by reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal as they turn to southpaw Tyler Holton (2-2, 4.13 ERA) in a spot start as the Detroit starting rotation has two pitchers on the Injured List. The Cubs will counter with veteran right-hander Jameson Taillon (5-3, 3.76 ERA) who has won three consecutive starts allowing a combined four earned runs in those three outings.

With the sixth most total bases in all of Major League Baseball, Cubs centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong leads Chicago with 15 home runs this season and is tied for the team lead with fellow outfielder Seiya Suzuki with 53 RBIs in his first 63 games this season. Crow-Armstrong, in his third big league season, has posted career highs in doubles, home runs and RBIs already this season and will play in his 200th career MLB game on Saturday. The 23-year-old was a first-round selection by the Mets in the 2020 MLB Draft but was sent to Chicago as part of the deal that landed New York Javier Baez and Trevor Williams the following year.

Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson regained the team lead in home runs and RBIs on Friday with a solo home run in the sixth inning that gave Detroit the lead en route to a 3-1 home win. Torkelson ranks 10th in MLB with 15 homer this season and is on pace for his second career 30-home run campaign after smashing a career high 31 back in 2023.

Chicago holds a narrow 4-3 lead over the Tigers dating back to the start of the 2023 season with the teams evenly split 2-2 in games played in Detroit during that span.
